Sex Research and Real Life: Complexity Embraced

Julia R. Heiman (Director of The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction and Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University)

Dr. Heiman’s career has focused on understanding patterns of sexuality from an integrated psychosocialbiomedical perspective Dr. Heiman has published broadly in the area of sex research on male and female sexual function and dysfunction, with her primary interests being psychophysiological components of sexual arousal patterns, measurement of sexual response, sexual dysfunction treatment, sexuality and health, and sexual and relationship correlates of histories of childhood sexual and physical abuse.  Since 2005, she has collaborated with colleagues researching the impact of cognitive and pharmacological interventions on sexual response and satisfaction, neuroendocrine-behavior interactions and sexual risk patterns, sexual problems and values of midlife couples in five countries and avenues to improve the media reporting of sex research.
